NICHOLAS THOMPSON GALLERY & RHYS LEE FEATURED IN ‘ART COLLECTOR: SYDNEY CONTEMPORARY SPECIAL EDITION’

Bright Futures for Young Galleries

…Nicholas Thompson Gallery, which opened in Melbourne early 2015 is one such gallery exhibiting in the Future Contemporary sector. “I am very excited to be involved with the fair, which is emerging as one of the most significant in our region”, says gallery director Nicholas Thompson ahead of the fair. “I am looking forward to presenting my new gallery to a new audience.”

Thompson, who has over a decade’s experience working with several of Australia’s most prominent galleries, is showing work by artist Rhys Lee. Lee works with an unpredictable and intuitive freedom that is guided by an understanding of structure, form and colour. There is depth and danger in his work; his ambiguous subjects emerge from the paper like half human characters from half remembered nightmares. Lee has exhibited since the late 1990s throughout Australia and internationally and his work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia and Artbank.

“Rhys Lee’s practice demonstrates a solid trajectory and process of inquiry that I think will be compelling to view in t he context of a strong solo exhibition.” says Thompson. “The cohesive selection of works will really resonate with viewers, especially in the context of an art fair where there can be a lot of visual information to absorb.”
