NICHOLAS THOMPSON GALLERY (BOOTH A05)

Nicholas Thompson has a great eye for painting and this year he has given his booth over to Amber Wallis for a solo show. I love her rich paintings that meld abstraction and figuration, which she calls “an ode to the staining and the materiality of feminism,” in that they demonstrate her desire to paint with technical limitations to the extent that painting becomes an exercise in restraint and quiet consideration. They are wonderfully decadent and intelligent at the same time.
