‘Wallis is keenly interested in domestic space, particularly women in domestic space. She says the structure of her work represents the past but also her domestic present since becoming a mother, considering the mundanity and ordinariness of daily life and how fantasy can lift you out of it. “I’m always interested in that space between past, present, and future, or intimate fantasy. If I can’t do it in real life, maybe I can do it in a painterly life,” she says. Painted quickly on raw linen, her paintings hover between abstraction and figuration and are difficult to pin down, which is what makes them so arresting.’
