Art & Australia has a new home at the VCA. This follows the gift by previous editor and publisher, Eleonora Triguboff, of the journal and its extensive archive to the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne in December 2015. Art & Australia will re-launch as a research and publishing body that focuses critically on contemporary art, especially in its theoretical, socio-cultural and geo-political contexts. Su Baker is the new editor-in-chief and Edward Colless will be editor from 2016. In print since 1963 Art & Australia is the country’s longest running art journal.

SUZANNE ARCHER EXHIBITION REVIEWED IN ‘THE AGE’

Though death’s ever-increasing proximity forms the unavoidable nub of senior painter Suzanne Archer’s new exhibition of towering, texture-stuttered oils and smaller watercolour and acrylic paintings, her gaggle of dancing, twirling, boogying skeletons (several of them resplendent in wide-brimmed hats and all of them complete with puppeteers’ strings) seem to cackle in the face of the ultimate end. There’s something very Peter Booth about these paintings, both in subject matter and application. This exhibition considers the work of contemporary artists who employ light and related technologies, and examines their practice in relation to artistic precedents. Historically, artists invoked light’s symbolic power and, from the late-19th century, explored its fleeting optical effects. In the 1920s and 1930s László Moholy-Nagy and his contemporaries equated electric light with Modernist ideals while, in the 1960s and 1970s, Minimalist and Conceptual artists, including Dan Flavin and Bruce Nauman, experimented with fluorescence.
